GREAT FOR
Keiki in elementary and middle school, their ‘ohana and loved ones of all ages

Our inaugural Keiki Street Festival kicked off with a bang! It was amazing to have so many ‘ohana come out to explore and learn, and we loved seeing our keiki immerse themselves in a variety of new experiences.

All along Auahi St., the ‘Imi Loa (Explorer) Zone vendors and entertainers caught the attention of passersby, inviting keiki to jump and climb through a bounce house obstacle course, stuff their own plush animals, create their own comic superheroes, get henna body art, paint signs, and ride through a wave simulation, among lots of other hands-on activities. The street filled with bubbles and laughter and music as kids explored around with stuffed animals on their backs and glitter on their faces.

In the Barn at SALT at Our Kaka‘ako, our Kula (Fields) and Kai (Sea) Zones delighted the keiki with coloring pages, arts and crafts, and a tactile sand pit. Peering around the folks gathered in one corner, we saw the animals in the petting zoo receive plenty of pats and praise.

The keiki got to run around and dance and play in the grass at Kaloko‘eli Courtyard during our free classes. Our friends at Orangetheory® Fitness, Still & Moving Center, and My Treehouse Club led fitness, hula, yoga, and performance classes to get the kids’ hearts pumping and energy flowing.

Throughout the event footprint, there were treats and goodies everywhere you turned, a true wonderland for all the kids and young at heart!

To bring to life an urban oasis for outdoor learning through play, we incorporated culturally rooted activities to engage attendees and foster a greater awareness and appreciation for Hawaiian culture. Our vendors offered culturally infused products, including Laulima Conservation apparel and home goods that feature native species and support local conservation, the Keiki Kaukau toy food sets spotlighting the melting pot of cuisines here in Hawai‘i, and the original comics by MANA COMICS, which feature stories starring superheroes represented by Native Hawaiian and other local cultures here on the islands. Plus, our friends at AccesSurf were back with us setting up a cool wave simulation and raising awareness of their mission to make the ocean accessible for everyone, no matter their disabilities.

We also continued our commitment to mālama i ka ‘āina and support sustainable initiatives by partnering with Waiākea Hawaiian Volcanic Water, who gave out free water in 100% post-consumer recycled bottles made of plastic that is removed from oceanbound waterways and beaches. Those bottles and all other recyclables from the event were given to Bottles 4 College, an organization that collects these materials to award scholarships for local kids to go to college.

Mahalo nui to everyone who came together to bring this big event to life: our sponsors Kamehameha Schools, the Kaiāulu ‘o Kaka‘ako Owners Association, Hawaiian Electric, Waiākea Hawaiian Volcanic Water, JPG Hawaii, and The UPS Store, as well as our partners and vendors. It was our intention to create a fun and interactive space for our keiki to learn and try new things, and we hope all of you who came out to play had a blast!
