Mālama ‘Āina Community Cleanup

Our Kaka‘ako, Kaiāulu ‘O Kaka‘ako Owners Association (KOKA) and Waterfront Plaza, invite you to the Mālama ‘Āina Community Cleanup on Saturday, April 13th.

Join us as we help contribute to a healthy honua. Share the kuleana and kōkua to mālama ʻāina (care for the land). Spots are limited. Register now to reserve your spot.

ʻAʻohe hana nui ke alu ʻia.
No task is too big when done together by all.

Walk-ins will be accepted on the day of. Please register onsite at the check-in table.


Cleanup Checklist

Please come prepared for spending the morning outdoors! We recommend bringing:

Water in a reusable bottle

Reef-safe sunscreen

A hat

Sunglasses or protective eyewear

Comfortable closed-toe footwear

Additional cleanup supplies, if you prefer to use your own (we will offer reusable gloves, trash grabbers, and trash bags onsite)

Event Schedule

8:30 a.m. – 8:50 a.m.
Check-In

  • Check-in or register at The Barn at SALT at Our Kaka‘ako.
  • Groups will be assigned onsite on a first-come, first serve basis. We suggest arriving with your friends or ‘ohana (you will get to make great new friends too!) if you want to be in the same group.
  • Pick up a map, a trash bag, and reusable gloves.
  • Enjoy a complimentary water bottle courtesy of Waiākea Hawaiian Volcanic Water.

9:00 a.m. – 9:10 a.m.
Welcome and Safety Briefing

  • Learn about what your day will look like along with what mālama ʻāina means.

9:10 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Community Cleanup

  • Clean up the neighborhood! Please put any recyclable beverage containers you find in a collection bag.
  • Please drop off collected ‘opala (trash) and recyclables at the Surfrider Foundation – O‘ahu Chapter and Our Kaka‘ako tents in Mother Waldron Park (corner of Cooke Street and Pohukaina Street) to be weighed.
    *NOTE: Mother Waldron Park ‘opala drop-off is available between 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

11:00 a.m.
Supply Drop Off and Pick up Makana (gift)

  • Head back to The Barn to drop off any borrowed cleanup supplies, and pick up water and snacks.
  • As a mahalo, don’t forget to pick up your makana (gift) from Hui Kū Maoli Ola for your kōkua (help) before you go!


Hui Kū Maoli Ola

In support of Indigenous Plant Month, we partnered with Hui Kū Maoli Ola to provide a native Hawaiian plant for each of our volunteers to take home. Hui Kū Maoli Ola is dedicated to the perpetuation and preservation of Hawai‘i’s natural history and culture. By integrating education, the propagation of native Hawaiian plants, quality restoration and landscaping services, Hui Kū is making improvements to and increasing public appreciation for the natural environment and cultural history of our precious island home.

Parking

$3 flat rate event parking is available at Waterfront Plaza (500 Ala Moana Blvd). Parking entrances are located on Pohukaina Street and South Street. Waterfront Plaza Parking validation stickers will be provided at event check-in.

FREE volunteer parking is available only at the SALT at Our Kaka‘ako parking garage (333 Keawe Street). Parking validation will be provided at event check-in.

Please note, standard parking rates will apply to all other Our Kaka‘ako parking garages (H Mart garage – 440 Keawe Street and The Shops at Keauhou Lane garage – 555 South Street). Event parking validation will not be offered.
