The bustling streets of Kaka‘ako came alive on Saturday, November 2, 2024 as the beloved Honolulu Night Market presented by American Savings Bank lit up the entire neighborhood with Hawaiian culture, community spirit and engaging activities. Known as one of the biggest, most popular block festivals on the island, the Honolulu Night Market brought the island together for an unforgettable evening!

Attendees perused through three city blocks lined with more than 80 food, drink and retail vendors. Friends met up with each other, families pushed little ones in strollers, pet parents walked their furry four-legged babies and couples enjoyed a fun date night. There was something for everybody — beer gardens for adults 21 and older, a wide variety of food from local vendors, delicious sweet drinks, ice cream and desserts, and even pet treats and accessories. People got an early start on their holiday shopping by buying gifts from local artists, crafters, designers and entrepreneurs.

Fashion designer Kahulale‘a was a major highlight on the main stage with a special fashion show displaying beautiful garments of contemporary Hawaiian wear. Kamehameha Schools Planning and Development Director Pualani Hao and Planning and Development Manager Raul Serrano gave welcoming remarks, showing their support for the community event. They were followed by Our Kaiāulu Votes, a hui of multiple schools and community organizations working to get out the vote. They spoke passionately about civic responsibility and invited attendees to participate in their chalk art installation at The Barn at SALT at Our Kaka‘ako.

Holding true to Our Kaka‘ako’s artistic vibes, Ellemsee mural artists Lauryn Gordines and Melon James spoke about the mural they completed live in The Barn. Their painting emphasized creative collaboration within the community, featuring frothy blue waves set against a stark black background, with the words “He no‘eau kākou a pau. E kipa mai, nou ka hale,” or, “Everyone is creative. Everyone is welcome.” The artists also included constellations to represent the grid of Our Kaka‘ako and green tamarind leaves, a symbol of education deeply valued by Princess Pauahi Bishop.
