The bustling streets of Kaka‘ako came alive on Saturday, November 2, 2024 as the beloved Honolulu Night Market presented by American Savings Bank lit up the entire neighborhood with Hawaiian culture, community spirit and engaging activities. Known as one of the biggest, most popular block festivals on the island, the Honolulu Night Market brought the island together for an unforgettable evening!

The event kicked off as former Miss Hawai‘i Lauren Teruya arrived at the main stage as the emcee. She welcomed the audience and introduced local songwriter Melaniie, who set the mood with lively music that could be heard throughout the district.

Attendees perused through three city blocks lined with more than 80 food, drink and retail vendors. Friends met up with each other, families pushed little ones in strollers, pet parents walked their furry four-legged babies and couples enjoyed a fun date night. There was something for everybody — beer gardens for adults 21 and older, a wide variety of food from local vendors, delicious sweet drinks, ice cream and desserts, and even pet treats and accessories. People got an early start on their holiday shopping by buying gifts from local artists, crafters, designers and entrepreneurs.

Fashion designer Kahulale‘a was a major highlight on the main stage with a special fashion show displaying beautiful garments of contemporary Hawaiian wear. Kamehameha Schools Planning and Development Director Pualani Hao and Planning and Development Manager Raul Serrano gave welcoming remarks, showing their support for the community event. They were followed by Our Kaiāulu Votes, a hui of multiple schools and community organizations working to get out the vote. They spoke passionately about civic responsibility and invited attendees to participate in their chalk art installation at The Barn at SALT at Our Kaka‘ako.

Holding true to Our Kaka‘ako’s artistic vibes, Ellemsee mural artists Lauryn Gordines and Melon James spoke about the mural they completed live in The Barn. Their painting emphasized creative collaboration within the community, featuring frothy blue waves set against a stark black background, with the words “He no‘eau kākou a pau. E kipa mai, nou ka hale,” or, “Everyone is creative. Everyone is welcome.” The artists also included constellations to represent the grid of Our Kaka‘ako and green tamarind leaves, a symbol of education deeply valued by Princess Pauahi Bishop.

American Savings Bank, the event’s presenting sponsor, stood out at the intersection of Auahi and Coral Streets with their neon green flags. Their booths offered live screen printing for limited-edition tote bags, available in designs like taro leaves, palm trees or the Honolulu Night Market logo. Only the first 650 Instagram followers received these bags, which made them sought-after keepsakes. The ASB prize wheel also created excitement, with one of the standout prizes being a limited-edition Fighting Eel x ASB collaboration tote bag.
Taimane took the main stage around 7 p.m., capturing audiences with her signature dynamic ‘ukulele performance. Throughout the night, fellow local talents played live, including Kala‘e Camarillo, Sean Na‘auao. Over at the Courtyard Stage in Kaloko‘eli Courtyard, Mandy Suganuma and Bryan Min were emcees, introducing performances by Micah Ganiron, Clara Stegall, Lovejack, Drew Henmi and Ryan Perez. What a star-studded show!
There were activities for people beyond shopping. Vendors went all out for the “Get Lit” decorating contest, where people could scan QR codes to vote for their favorite lighted booths, and were entered to win a $100 Hawai‘i Swim Collective gift card. Inside The Barn, attendees participated in the “Give Light” initiative, where people who donated at least $10 to Hawaiian nonprofits Keiki ‘O Ka ʻĀina, Pauahi Foundation or Mālama Loko Ea Foundation received an LED light up balloon. And, outside in the SALT courtyard, community engagement took on a digital dimension through the “Share Light” poll. By answering questions on their phones, attendees could see their responses projected on a big screen. It was a fun and creative way for connection and engagement with the community!
The Honolulu Night Market at Our Kaka‘ako was a memorable night with so many fun elements — live performances, interactive booths, art and food. Mahalo to all our sponsors who made this evening possible. Thank you to the vendors who participated and to the community for coming out and enjoying the event. We look forward to the next Honolulu Night Market in June 2025!
