An estimated 18,000 people filled the vibrant streets of Our Kakaʻako for the Honolulu Night Market presented by American Savings Bank. The event transformed Auahi, Keawe and Coral Streets, and The Barn at SALT, into a bustling hub of food, fashion, music and culture.
Hoʻomau: A celebration of enduring traditions
This year’s theme is Hoʻomau. In ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, hoʻomau means “to persevere,” which set the tone for a night dedicated to honoring cultural pride and resilience. Guests were invited to engage with Hawaiʻi’s living traditions through immersive experiences, including:
- Pua hulu (feathered flower) workshops with Kamehameha Schools Kapālama students
- Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea educational display highlighting the perseverance of the lāhui
- Voices of Continuity storytelling series, featuring cultural practitioners sharing the importance of carrying traditions forward
- Mele and fashion that reflect Hawaiian culture and history
A standout feature was the Modern Voices Booth, a project with Hawai‘i Public Radio and Aloha Affair Rentals. Guests stepped into a vintage phone booth, picked up a rotary phone, and responded to prompts that invited them to share heartfelt reflections and personal stories. These community responses will be preserved in a growing archive, capturing the spirit of perseverance and cultural continuity for future generations.
Celebrating Hawaiʻi’s fashion and entertainment
The energy was electric across Our Kakaʻako, with live music and hula performances echoing throughout the night on the main stage at the corner of Auahi and Coral Streets.
- Merrie Monarch award-winning Hālau Mōhala ʻIlima, as well as Nā Pualei o Likolehua
- Nā Hōkū Hanohano-award winning musicians Jerry Santos and Kamuela Kimokeo, and Anthony Pfluke and Kamaka Camarillo
Fashion took center stage as [KI-ELE] showcased its modern, Hawaiʻi-inspired designs, including the popular Hibiscus Hawaiian Quilt print. Guests were even invited to strut their stuff in an impromptu runway show.
And just off Keawe Street, Kalokoʻeli Courtyard was buzzing with excitement for rising talents like Kaia Soul, Izik and Lina, Drew Henmi, and ʻĀlewa – a young Hawaiian musical group featuring Kamehameha Schools haumāna. The crowd was captivated by their incredible performances that honored Hawaiʻi’s history.
Supporting local businesses
As part of its 100 years of serving Hawaiʻi’s communities, presenting sponsor American Savings Bank welcomed guests to their booth and VIP lounge at Morning Brew Kakaʻako. They took over Coral Street, bringing in almost a dozen Buy Local merchants!
In all, there were nearly 100 local vendors across three blocks of Our Kakaʻako – each offering unique retail experiences, information or ʻono food options. This was our biggest Honolulu Night Market yet! And while our event may have gotten bigger, it continues to be a way of bringing our community together!
