A lei of gratitude, a kalo leaf scavenger hunt, and an opportunity to grow naupaka were among the many cultural and educational activities offered in Our Kakaʻako for the Keiki Street Festival presented by American Savings Bank!
This year marked the 3rd year of the Keiki Street Festival, inspired by the legacy of Ke Aliʻi Bernice Pauahi Pākī Bishop to provide educational opportunities to keiki. The event took over SALT at Our Kakaʻako and Keawe, Coral, and Auahi Streets on Saturday, March 29.
Kamehameha Schools Kapālama haumana and emcee extraordinaire Kamahaʻo Haumea-Thronas kicked off the event! He quizzed keiki on their hua ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language vocabulary) and introduced performances by Hālau Hula ‘O Hokulani and Kamehameha Schools, as well as a fashion show from Alikaleo. The entertainment continued throughout the day with dance performances, DJ sets, and live music!
In the Barn at SALT at Our Kakaʻako, ʻohana gathered to relax, read and cultivate their knowledge in the shade. Keiki got to try out digital ahupuaʻa learning apps, augmented reality coloring sheets, and make name tags with Kamehameha Schools; received native plant education and planted naupaka with Bishop Museum; and created native bird art and bird feeders with Da Dream Lab. Orangetheory Fitness held a keiki boot camp at Kalokoʻeli Courtyard, giving ʻohana a chance to be active, too!
On Coral Street, presenting sponsor American Savings Bank threw a birthday party to celebrate their 100 years of serving Hawaiʻi. A magician dazzled keiki with tricks, and bank team members handed out balloons, cupcakes, and party swag to continue the celebration! There was even a word scramble and scavenger hunt for keiki to test out their financial smarts.
There was even more fun throughout Our Kakaʻako! Bottles4College, the Girl Scouts of Hawaiʻi, and the Honolulu Fire Department had activities for keiki, too. And local businesses offering face and body art, handmade crafts, and all sorts of ʻono food and treats participated in Keiki Street Festival. There was something for everyone!
Mahalo nui to everyone who attended, and to our sponsors, partners, and vendors, including American Savings Bank, Kamehameha Schools, the Kaiāulu ‘o Kaka‘ako Owners Association, JPG Hawaii, The UPS Store, and Pacific Media Group.
