#1 Cooking Safety

Did you know that cooking fires are the #1 cause of emergencies at home during the holidays? If you have to leave the kitchen for a brief moment, take a cooking spoon with you as a reminder that you have something on the stove or in the oven.

#2 Electrical Safety

When you buy Christmas lights, look for the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) symbol on the back of the box. UL tests to make sure all lights sold in the United States meet safety standards.

#3 Smoke Alarms

Plan to test the smoke alarms in your home at least once a month and replace smoke alarms every 10 years. If you are not sure when your smoke alarm was made, check on the back for the date it was manufactured.

#4 Emergency Preparedness

Create an emergency evacuation plan for your home and plan to have two ways out of every room. Practice your evacuation plan during the day, and at night, when visually it is darker and the environment could look different.

More Safety Resources Available

If you want to learn more about safety from our experts at the Honolulu Fire Department, check out their website. They have a variety of resources on staying safe at home, work, and other scenarios.

And Teach Your Keiki About Fire Safety

It is also important to teach your keiki about safety early on so they can stay safe. HFD offers free activity worksheets in ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i and English for your keiki to learn fire safety tips in a fun way. Check them out here!
