Pop up Music at Kaloko‘eli Courtyard

Jul 28, 2021 | Blog

There’s nothing like live music to elevate the spirits and build community. That’s exactly what happened on a beautiful Saturday afternoon on July 24, when live music returned to Our Kakaʻako with our first Pop Up Music event of 2021 at Kalokoʻeli Courtyard, the small park near The Flats at Puʻunui. Families, friends and neighbors safely gathered outdoors while socially distanced for this free concert featuring the award-winning music of popular Hawaiian musical artists Ben Kama and Vaihi.

Attendees laid out their blankets, mats and beach chairs on the lawn to comfortably enjoy the live music. Ben Kama opened the event with his contemporary Hawaiian musical stylings, singing “Sweet Lady of Waihole.” His considerable ‘ukulele skills melodically blended with those of his band members on guitar, bass and drums. He ended his performance with an original song that he holds close to his heart about his hometown, “Sweet Waimānalo.” A 2021 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award nominee, Ben’s passionate performance set the tone for the event.

Multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning Hawaiian music group, Vaihi, performed next with their upbeat fusion sound of island reggae, soul, hip hop, blues and funk, creating a unique backyard musical ambiance. They played familiar and popular songs that they’ve performed all over the world. The audience enjoyed a special treat from a couple of ladies who danced impromptu hula in the beautiful courtyard.

A couple of Our Kakaʻako merchants were also on hand sharing information, special offers and product samples with attendees. With health and safety as a continuing priority, audience members were socially distanced, and hand sanitizer and extra face masks were made available to them.

Our Kaka‘ako is happy to safely host events like these that connect the community, share and honor culture, and bring back the joy of live music. Mahalo to the Kaiāulu ‘o Kaka‘ako Owners Association for sponsoring our first summer pop up music event! Thank you to everyone who attended and spent their Saturday afternoon with us to support local music artists and small businesses. Check back for more future events planned at Our Kakaʻako!
